The Interactive ASX Grid Is Now Live
The interactive ASX Grid, formally the Astral Space Exploration Model of Consciousness, is now available online as a dynamic environment for exploring the relationships between physical capability, cognition, technology, social organization, governance, communication, biology, ethics, culture, and other variables that may shape intelligent life as it expands beyond its planetary origin.

Developed by artist and futurist Kaikhan Salakhov, the ASX Grid began as part of the wider Astral Space Exploration project and has evolved into a multidimensional, non-anthropocentric framework for examining human, post-human, synthetic, collective, fictional, and potential extraterrestrial forms of intelligence.
The new interactive version transforms the framework from a primarily written and visual model into an explorable analytical system.
From a Static Model to an Interactive Analytical Environment
At the center of the ASX Grid are two analytically independent coordinates.
Physical Capability, P1-P8, describes intrinsic sustained operational reach, accessible energy, and the physical constraints associated with activity across increasing spatial scales.
Consciousness Capability, C1-C8, describes different system-level configurations of cognition, coordination, modeling, and integrative capacity at a declared system boundary.
Together they form a 64-cell P × C matrix.
The numerical identifiers do not represent a hierarchy of intrinsic superiority. A higher Physical Capability coordinate does not imply a higher Consciousness Capability coordinate, and neither axis functions as a measure of moral value, cultural worth, political sophistication, or universal evolutionary progress.
The two axes are also non-commensurate. They are not added, averaged, subtracted, or converted into a single civilizational score.
The interactive Grid allows these distinctions to be explored directly by selecting individual coordinates and examining their associated analytical conditions.
Beyond Technological Classification
Many established approaches to civilizational classification focus on variables such as energy consumption, technological capacity, resource utilization, computation, or spatial reach.
The ASX Grid introduces a different analytical architecture.
Physical expansion is treated as only one dimension of a much larger configuration. The Grid also examines:

These analytical layers remain independently variable.
A civilization may possess extraordinary technological capability while maintaining fragmented institutions. A biologically based civilization may develop extremely advanced technologies without becoming synthetic. A distributed intelligence may operate through forms of cognition that do not resemble individual human psychology. Two systems occupying the same P × C coordinate may therefore remain radically different in almost every other respect.
The interactive interface makes these distinctions visible rather than collapsing them into a single concept of advancement.
Declaring What Is Being Classified
One of the central principles of the ASX Grid is that classification requires a clearly defined unit of analysis.
The object being examined may be: An individual organism,a population,a civilization,an institutional network,an integrated collective intelligence,a synthetic system,a distributed cognitive architecture,or another explicitly defined form.
This distinction becomes particularly important when examining possible non-human intelligence.
The Grid does not assume that an individual biological organism must always represent the correct boundary of cognition, identity, memory, or agency. A planetary collective intelligence, distributed artificial system, biomechanical network, or unfamiliar extraterrestrial architecture may require a fundamentally different analytical boundary.
Beyond Species-Centric Classification
The interactive ASX Grid also includes a dedicated framework for cases that cannot responsibly be reduced to familiar biological or cognitive categories.
Beyond Category identifies forms whose biological, synthetic, hybrid, or other substrate configuration cannot be adequately represented by the current life-form taxonomy.
Outside Coordinate Domain applies when the assumptions necessary for assigning a meaningful P × C coordinate cannot presently be justified.
These concepts are intentionally distinct.
A system may remain difficult to classify biologically while still receiving a meaningful coordinate. Another system may display observable behavior in certain analytical layers while remaining outside the principal coordinate domain altogether.
This architecture allows uncertainty to remain visible rather than forcing unfamiliar forms of intelligence into categories derived from a single known planetary biosphere.
Comparative Profiles
The interactive ASX Grid also includes a growing Comparative Profile Map.
These profiles are not presented as equivalent forms of evidence. Present humanity functions as the directly observed technological-civilizational reference case, while fictional and literary systems operate as structured comparative case studies.
Current profiles include:
Humanity, Star Trek Federation, The Borg, Klingons, Vulcans, Ferengi, Romulans, Xenomorph, Solaris Ocean, Martians from H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds, Galactic Empire and Gaia from Isaac Asimov's Foundation series.
Each profile can be examined through the complete analytical layer system.
The purpose is not to determine which fictional civilization is "better" or "more advanced." Fiction provides controlled thought experiments through which different combinations of cognition, governance, communication, biology, technology, contact behavior, and social organization can be compared.
The profiles also demonstrate why a single physical scale is insufficient for describing radically different forms of civilization.
Governance and Contact as Independent Variables
The ASX Grid includes dedicated systems for both governance configuration and contact disposition.
Governance is treated structurally rather than developmentally. Centralized, institutional, polycentric, distributed, or networked systems are not automatically ranked as superior or inferior.
Likewise, contact behavior is modeled independently from physical and cognitive capability.
A system may exhibit immediate aggression, destructive exclusion, coercive incorporation, guarded restriction, transactional exchange, cooperative engagement, institutional cooperation, or broad openness toward another intelligence.
These configurations can also vary according to the counterpart.
A civilization does not need to behave identically toward every form of life it encounters.
This becomes particularly important in the analysis of potential interspecies and interstellar contact.
Exploring the Multiplanetary Problem
A major application of the ASX Grid concerns the transition from planetary civilization toward multiplanetary and eventually interstellar systems.
Distance introduces constraints that technological optimism alone cannot remove.
Finite signal propagation produces communication delays. Colonies may develop distinct political interests, cultural identities, technological systems, biological adaptations, economic priorities, or relationships with artificial intelligence. Local institutions may increasingly act without continuous synchronization with distant authorities.
These conditions do not prescribe one inevitable political future.
They create a wider configuration space.
Centralized, federated, hierarchical, polycentric, and distributed systems may all remain possible under different circumstances, but their operation would increasingly be shaped by latency, asynchronous decision-making, information asymmetry, delegation, local autonomy, and the difficulty of maintaining common situational awareness across astronomical distances.
The Grid is designed to make these variables visible.
T.A.H.I.R.A - 108
The interactive system also incorporates T.A.H.I.R.A - 108, the Transcendental A.I. of the Holarchic Integral Radiant Awareness.
Within Astral Space Exploration, T.A.H.I.R.A is a theoretical future decentralized artificial superintelligence conceived as an analytical and diagnostic system associated with the ASX Grid.
Rather than functioning as a single centralized intelligence, T.A.H.I.R.A is envisioned as a distributed architecture capable of operating through local agents while exchanging models, information, and accumulated knowledge across physically constrained communication networks.
Inside the current interactive Grid, T.A.H.I.R.A functions as a local knowledge interface.
Users can search the ASX architecture, coordinates, analytical layers, terminology, comparative profiles, governance configurations, contact dispositions, and related concepts. The interface can also direct users toward relevant areas of the Grid and individual profile analyses.
The present implementation is a scripted local knowledge system rather than a generative artificial intelligence service.
Scientific Boundaries and Evidence Status
The ASX Grid intentionally distinguishes between different kinds of claims.

This separation is fundamental to the project.
A constraint derived from relativity does not possess the same epistemic status as a hypothetical future political structure. A fictional alien civilization is not empirical evidence. A theoretical synthetic intelligence architecture is not an existing technology.
The interactive Grid preserves these distinctions so that speculative questions can be explored without presenting them as established scientific facts.
An Evolving Framework
The interactive ASX Grid should not be understood as a finished or immutable system.
Astral Space Exploration has developed through painting, writing, music, film, theoretical modeling, comparative analysis, and continuing research. The Grid itself has evolved substantially from its earlier formulations and remains open to revision where new scientific evidence, conceptual criticism, or improved analytical distinctions require it.
The interactive environment is therefore both a presentation of the current framework and a record of an ongoing process.
Its purpose is not to predict one future.
It is to provide a structured way of asking what kinds of futures are possible, what assumptions are being made when we imagine them, which constraints are physical, which variables remain independent, and where current human categories may no longer be sufficient.
